Released in 1989 (Europe) / 1990 (US), Piece of Time is the debut album by Atheist, one of the pioneers of technical death metal. This album blended the brutality of death metal with intricate jazz-inspired rhythms, complex time signatures, and virtuosic musicianship.

While not as widely recognized upon release as some of their later work, Piece of Time is now considered a groundbreaking album in extreme metal, paving the way for bands like Cynic and Death to incorporate jazz and progressive elements into death metal.
